Read Freely is taking their next Beyond the Bookshelf talk to Eufaula! Join us Oct. 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the Old Pecan Factory to discuss Alabama’s public libraries, recent ideological and bigoted code changes within the APLS, the threat to your First Amendment rights, and what you can do as a citizen to defend our public libraries and our constitutional rights. Dinner will be provided!
This and other Beyond the Bookshelf events are part of an ongoing series designed to promote and advance civic engagement and advocate against censorship in Alabama’s public libraries. This was made possible through the awarding of a grant earlier this year by the Nathan Cummings Foundation (NCF).
This grant allows Read Freely Alabama to host eight events– six in-person and four online– focusing on citizen involvement and racial justice in the fight against censorship. These educational events seek to empower local communities to become more involved as advocates for social and racial justice. We hope participants will leave with the knowledge and confidence to challenge book bans and other restrictive legislation targeted toward Alabama’s public libraries with the support of and opportunity to join our coalition partners.
